Amazon rainforest myths and mysteries
Known as the "lungs of the Earth," the Amazon rainforest is a site of magic and mystery in addition to being a rich ecological wonder. The legends and mysteries surrounding this enormous jungle have been shaped over ages by explorers, scientists, and native tribes. These five intriguing myths and mysteries of the Amazon jungle range from tales of lost civilizations to paranormal encounters.
1. The Lost City of El Dorad
The legend of El Dorado, or "The Golden One," is perhaps the most famous Amazonian myth. It began in the 16th century when Spanish conquistadors, led by tales of a city made entirely of gold, journeyed into the heart of the Amazon in search of untold wealth. According to myth, this hidden city was inhabited by a rich and powerful civilization that performed lavish ceremonies where a king would cover himself in gold dust and wash it off in a sacred lake. While many explorers died searching for this city, some claim to have seen evidence of its ruins deep in the jungle. In recent years, advanced satellite imaging and archaeological technology have revealed ancient settlements and structures in the Amazon, renewing interest in the possibility that some form of “El Dorado” may indeed exist.
